Minnesota Summer Storms & Hail Damage – Is Your Home Protected?
Published May 13, 2026 • 6 min read • By Chandler Insurance Agency
Every summer, Minnesota homeowners get a harsh reminder: our storms are no joke.
From golf-ball sized hail in the Twin Cities to straight-line winds across the Iron Range, summer weather can cause thousands of dollars in damage in just minutes. In northern Minnesota, these storms often hit harder because many homes have older roofs that have already endured decades of harsh winters.
What Summer Storms Typically Damage
- Roofs – Hail can shatter shingles and cause leaks. In northern Minnesota, older asphalt shingles are especially vulnerable after years of ice dam cycles.
- Siding & Windows – High winds and flying debris can crack siding, break windows, and damage gutters.
- Vehicles – Dented cars and cracked windshields are very common (comprehensive coverage usually helps here).
- Outdoor Structures – Sheds, decks, fences, and playground equipment can be heavily damaged by wind and hail.
Important: Standard homeowners policies usually cover sudden storm damage, but wear and tear or lack of maintenance is not covered. Make sure your roof isn’t already 15+ years old — many claims in our area get partially denied because of pre-existing wear.
How to Prepare Before the Next Storm
- Have your roof inspected every 3–5 years (especially important in northern Minnesota after harsh winters)
- Trim trees that could fall on your house during high winds
- Secure outdoor furniture, grills, and trampolines before storms roll through
- Know your deductible — many people choose higher deductibles to save money, but make sure you can afford it if a major storm hits
- Document your home’s condition with photos before storm season begins
Does Your Policy Cover Hail?
Most standard homeowners policies in Minnesota do cover hail damage under the “wind and hail” peril. However, some older policies or policies with “named storm” exclusions may limit coverage. It’s also important to understand that if your roof is old or has existing damage, the insurance company may only pay to repair the storm-damaged areas — not replace the entire roof. Our agents serving Grand Rapids & Itasca County and Virginia & the Iron Range can review your specific policy for these details.
